Good advice and precaution measures to be taken when staying in South Africa

  • Don’t walk around after dark – always go by car!

  • Keep the car doors locked, the windows rolled up and the valuables out of sight.

  • If you walk around, stick to safe areas.

  • Women should not walk alone at any time.

  • Do not stop if your car has a flat tyre in an unsafe area! Drive slowly to the nearest safe area.

  • Be careful about taxis. Ask the hotel or the restaurant to book a licensed taxi.

  • Avoid using cash machines at night or in isolated places.

  • Do not resist if an armed person threatens you!

  • Do not carry lots of cash on you, and do not visibly wear expensive watches, jewellery and cameras.

  • Make two photocopies of valuable documents such as passports, tickets, visa and traveller’s cheques.

  • Keep one copy with you in a separate place in the destination and leave another copy with someone at home.

  • The police emergency centre is not effective – in South Africa, private security services companies are widely used.

  • Always keep your travel insurance documents near you and visible in the car or in your wallet!

  • Without visible and valid insurance cover, you risk being left behind even in serious emergencies!

  • Avoid unprotected sex. The risk of contracting HIV is extremely high!

  • Avoid public hospitals – always find a private hospital. Avoid public ambulance transportation.
